EIGTH EDITION!!

Aaron Starkey Music Newsletter

FRIENDS....this is the EIGHTH Aaron Starkey Music Newsletter!

If you are getting this for the first time..it's because i'm still learning to send email. If you are sad to get an email from me....please respond back with "no thanks!" and i'll gladly remove you from all future missives!

ok..lets chat:

resistant? procrastinating? impedance? relevance? age? I'm sure there is a latin word for all of it? Those are words that I'm feeling right now around music.

I don't mean resistance to the greater challenges of our day, (but yes, resist!) I mean the internal resistance to starting the work that needs to be done. Resistance is for DC current and impedance is for AC circuits (if i recall correctly) and i think that's more accurate. I feel impedance in starting the work that needs to be done so that others can learn about the work that's been done...like a record for example.

This newsletter, such as it is, is my attempt to lower the impedance to starting the work that needs to be done but even so, the circuit pushes back? it's resists. am I the resistor? fear? the world? relevance? what is the material that cause the current to resist?

All of that is to say, here we are and here i am..doing some soul searching on why i'm slow to promote music, Also, it seems like some folks have to promote and others don't. if you have to promote..should you even promote? make sense? maybe not? I came up with the notion that perhaps I feel like i'm not doing anything that is "enough" or grand enough to be promoted, at least compared to my peers. Which...whatever. Who are my peers, etc? What is worthy? Basically feeling like I'm past my prime of relevance and am having to "ask" people to "enjoy" my music. It's an easy pit to fall into. but yet, i'll keep pushing because ultimately it's...fun to play music with friends. and hey, if you need a guitar player, ask me. i'd love to play with you.

on that note..shows to announce!

ok! That was a lot..and there is more....

Lots of questions this week !

Ryan, a frequent reader, asked me "What song do you want played at your funeral/wake/party?" and my immediate response, in my head, (which has always been the song that i wanted played,) is "Ramblin' Man" by the Allman Brothers...this was true when i was 16 and still true at 53. Why? Well, that guitar riff, at 16, just blew my mind. so noodley! I had to learn it..and to fresh ears, the lyrics sounded like a siren call to the open road, the unknown, adventure!, moving on and moving out (and living in central illinois and my childhood, that sounded like a great thing) So yeah..play Ramblin' Man when i'm gone!

James asked "what was your first experience of performing with a guitar and singing in front of family/friends/school?"..and that's easy...my first time playing guitar in front of people would have been in high school at a party where my first band played..i don't know who's party, and I don't remember what we played. but i do remember it! First time singing? that was feb of 2012 at the sunset tavern. scary. lots of shots involved. few people were there. it was "pizza" night and there was no bill listed! if it hadn't gone well, i'd have never done it again!

and Aimee asked "How do you like to dress your hot dog?" and well, i'm a coney island dog kinda gal. a meaty no bean chili, thin grated cheese, fresh onions, dog as big as the bun. that is the IDEAL way to eat a hot dog. second choice is a chicago dog. There was a place in springfield, where i grew up, called Coney Island, open edin 1919! My grandmother ate there as a kid and in high school I would get off the bus early to grab a few dogs and then hit the used record store. (see allman brothers reference above)

If you've read this far...I invite you to write me a question and I'll try and answer it in my next email! I like questions!
